Graceful Since Time Immemorial

Tant, a popular form of handloom in West Bengal, flourished and prospered during the Mughal reign in India. In spite of sailing through the tempestuous British Raj, the splendid Tant saree managed to somehow pave its way and hold its self-worth, braving the test of time. In Bengal, it emerged and succeeded as an eye-catching and fashionable saree being worn on all kinds of occasions and events.

About The Karigars:

In the past, skilled weavers used handlooms to create Tant sarees. Several Hindu weavers migrated to West Bengal after the partition of Bengal and with them came the traditional know-how of intricate weaving. These skills were passed on through generations of Tant weavers. Currently, places such as Murshidabad, Hooghly, and Tangail are hotspots for weaving Tant sarees.

However, in modern times, this has been replaced by power looms in an extensive manner. As power looms require less number of weavers, many have lost their source of livelihood. Battling the odds, the adept weavers have partnered with Amazon to keep intact the exquisiteness and charm of these handloom sarees.

Giving Shape to Tant

Washed To Remove Chemicals

Tant weaves are made with cotton, giving it a comfortable edge. The tant weavers obtain cotton yarns from external sources such as cotton mills. These yarns are then washed to rid them of the harsh chemicals and sun-dried.

Bleached And Sun-Dried

The yarns then go through stages of scarring and bleaching. A solution of caustic soda and hydrogen peroxide are used in the process. They are then boiled for an hour followed by drying in the sun.

Dyed In Boiling Water

Dyeing is the next step.

There are two kinds of dyeing. Red, maroon, orange and turquoise colours are done by reactive dyeing. On the other hand, vat dyeing is used for blue, green and brown shades. Vat dyeing is costly; therefore, reactive dyeing is preferred. Thereafter, the dyed yarns are starched and are further processed to make them all the more durable.

Spun And Wound On Bamboo Drums

The next step involves making threads from the processed yarns. The dry yarn is soaked in water and mixed with rice and popped-rice. The craftsmen then spin it on large drums called Norod, followed by re-spinning it on small cylinders called Noli. The thread is carefully weaved around a shaft frame called Shanabava and is then wound on drums made of bamboo. These bamboo drums of processed threads are then fit into the loom for weaving.

Designs Drawn By Artists

The border, pallu and body set each tant saree apart from the other. The intricate designs on these are done by artists who have learnt it from their fathers and forefathers. The sketched designs are then transcribed onto soft cardboards by perforating them. Even the simplest tant saree requires up to twelve hours of dedication to design and weave. The more intricate designs can take up to a week to finish.

Polished And Folded

After the saree is weaved, a mixture of popped rice and lime is used to polish it. It is then carefully folded and sent to the market for selling.

Types of Tant Sarees

Tant sarees can be widely classified into various types depending on the region of origin.

The Fulia Tangail style of weaving produces one of the finest tant sarees in recent times. The uniqueness of the saree lies in its exclusivity of being completely hand woven and hand designed. Begampuri style holds its speciality in light and translucent tant sarees that are found in deep and bright shades. The Dhaniakhali Tant sarees were traditionally known for their natural grey colour accompanied by bold red or black borders. The recent ones showcase a lot more variety due to the easy availability of readymade dyes. The tant from the Kalna region is similar to that of tangail in terms of weaving processes.

Traditional Motifs

The traditional motifs represent features of life, nature, religion, and rituals. The popular traditional motifs seen on Tant sarees are Ardha-chandra, Rajmahal, Hathi, Nilambari, and Phool. Intricately woven in fine threads of cotton, these sarees have an airy texture and lightweight.
